Matched Funding Challenge 2008

In December 2008, Alec Reed launched the world's first online matching challenge, creating a £1million fund to double donations to any charity registered on theBigGive.org.uk.

A further £1million was donated online in just 45 minutes, with 240 charities receiving donations. The diagram above shows how the money was split between the sectors.

In recognition of the success of the challenge, the Reed Foundation was awarded the 2009 Third Sector Excellence Award for Innovation in Grantmaking.
