Double your Donation - General FAQ

The Reed Foundation matched funding has now finished. You are still able to donate online but your donation will not be matched.

What is the new 'Double your Donation' scheme?

The Reed Foundation is generously supporting charities on The Big Give by matching all donations that are made through The Big Give website. The Reed Foundation will spend £1million to match donations of up to £5000 (per donor, per charity). Any donations over £5000 will have the first £5000 matched only.

When does matched giving start?

Matched donations from the Reed Foundation will start on 1st December 2008 (the current campaign has now ended), at which time a large "double your donation" will appear next to all eligible charities. The scheme will finish once £1 million has been donated.

What methods of donation are accepted?

Donations must be made online via credit or debit card ONLY. The following cards are accepted:

MasterCard Visa Maestro / Switch Solo Delta American Express

Who is eligible to receive a matched donation?

All charities registered on The Big Give and registered in the UK will be eligible for matched donations. The facility for matched giving will appear automatically as a 'double your donation' button on charity pages at www.theBigGive.org.uk from 1st December (the current campaign has now ended).

For charities who have recently registered with The Big Give, the donate online and matched funding feature should be available for use within 2 weeks.

When will matched donations for charities finish?

There are three limits to the amount of matched donations charities can receive.

- Matched donations for all charities will stop when £1million has been donated.
- Matched donations will stop for each charity when they have received a total £20,000 from the Reed Foundation.
- Matched funding will be limited to £5000 per donation and up to a total of £20,000 per donor (£5,000 per donor, per charity). Donors may give over these limits, but the excess will not be matched.

All Double Your Donation facilities will be removed as soon as £1 million has been donated through the site. The donate online facilities will remain.

Are there any exceptions?

Charities operating under the same brand but in different locations will be classed as one charity and will be eligible to receive a total of £20,000.

For example, all Age Concern charities will be given a total limit of £20,000. If you are unsure whether or not this applies to your charity please email info@thebiggive.org.uk with your details.

To ensure that matched funding is spread evenly across all sectors represented on The Big Give, The Reed Foundation retains the right to limit any matched funds given to a specific sector or cause.

Furthermore, Reed Foundation matched funding is not available to community foundations who are eligible to apply for the Grassroots Grants matched funding scheme from the government.

Will I be able to claim gift aid on the donation?

A Gift Aid option will be included on the online donation form.

Please note: The Reed Foundation will match the donation amount before Gift Aid is added.

What charges are involved?

Charities Trust, the donation management agency used by The Big GIve, charges 4% of the total gift (including Gift Aid if applicable). This is inclusive of all bank and card processing charges and is deducted before they pass the monies to the charity.

The Big Give remains completely free for all charities.

The Reed Foundation reserves the right to cease or limit the matched funding delivered to any charity or sector and to terminate the matched donations at any time.
