We are planning to build a Maggie's Centre next to the Nottingham City Hospital in Nottingham. Maggie's will provide a comprehensive programme of cancer support, which complements the work of the NHS. We have raised over £1.85m and are seeking a further £193,000 to begin building the Centre.
We are planning to build a Maggie's Centre next to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. The Freeman Hospital is the main cancer centre in the region and Maggie's will provide a comprehensive programme of cancer support, which complements the work of the NHS.
We have raised over £1 million towards our target and are seeking a further £1 million to begin building the Centre.
Maggie’s London opened in April 2008 and provides a blend of information, emotional and psychological support to anyone affected by cancer. Services are provided ‘under one roof’ in the positive and inspiring building designed by Lord Richard Rogers, next to Charing Cross hospital.
All services are provided free of charge and without the need for medical referral by a small professional team of highly qualified staff. 500 people annually are expected to benefit from courses including relaxation and visualisation, nutrition, expressive writing, art therapy and tai chi.
Positive outcomes of the courses include helping people with strategies to manage stress associated with their cancer diagnosis. The groups also often help people develop friendships combating the sense of isolation people affected by cancer commonly experience.
£10,000 will help cover the cost of running these courses for a whole year. This works out as little as £20 per person.
9 in 10 cancer patients' households experience a loss of income and/or an increase in costs as a result of their illness. But only half of cancer patients are given any advice on welfare benefits.
Welfare rights and benefits advice is part of the cancer care programme at the award winning Maggie’s Centres. A Maggie’s Centre is a welcoming, friendly and non-institutional place, adjacent to a major cancer treatment hospital, which provide support for people with any kind of cancer, their families, friends and carers. Maggie’s supports people from the moment they ask for help, free of charge, and unconditionally for as long as help is needed.
At Maggie’s London last year, our Benefits advisor, Jay Shah helped nearly 500 vulnerable people improve their household income by an average of £2,500.
We are seeking donations towards a £15m campaign to build five new Maggie's Centres in England and Wales. Our network of award-winning Centres in Scotland, where visitor numbers grew by 31% last year, has transformed the way in which healthcare professionals and architects approach the care of people affected by cancer, and this is an exciting opportunity to extend our reach in the UK.
Building work has began on the site of Maggie's in Cheltenham after completion of a successful £2.1 million capital campaign.
We aim to open the new centre in July 2010 and are now fundraising towards the centre's first two years running costs.
Will you consider supporting us to staff the new Maggie's Centre in Cheltenham?
