The Kambia Appeal
Mission Statement
The objective of The Kambia Appeal is to improve health in Sierra Leone, West Africa, by helping to strengthen the health services at health centres and the district hospital. We have been working exclusively in the Kambia District, which has a population of over 300,000 people, since 1992.
Our work helps to improve the lives of women, their children and their families by strengthening maternal health services to help reduce the number of women and babies that die during pregnancy and childbirth. In Sierra Leone 1 in 8 women die during pregnancy and childbirth, and 1 in 4 infants die before the age of five.
Our maternal health programme includes: provision of free emergency obstetric care at the district hospital; transportation for pregnant women between their villages, health centres and the hospital; a maternity waiting hostel for high-risk pregnant women. Other projects aimed to strengthen general healthcare in Kambia include Scholarships to allow local people to gain medical qualifications in Sierra Leone, including Community Health Officer diplomas, and visits by medical personnel from the UK.
