Modern Masterpieces
Mission Statement
Modern Masterpieces exists to produce the work of choreographer Michael Clark. Clark is one of the UK’s most significant dancers and choreographers. His impact is felt widely across contemporary dance, classical ballet, the visual arts, fashion, pop, and classical music, and there is a particularly strong awareness among audiences of his extraordinary body of work. Since starting his company in 1984, Clark has forged new collaborations across fashion, art and music, and engaged a new generation of audiences with dance.
In 2005, Clark became Artistic Associate of the Barbican and was commissioned to produce a trilogy of works to seminal dance scores by Igor Stravinsky. The Stravinsky Project programme was O set to ‘Apollo’, Mmm… set to ‘The Rite of Spring’ and I Do set to ‘Les Noces’. The project was conceived as a creative vehicle and context for Michael Clark and was presented over three consecutive years at the Barbican from 2005-07. The Stravinsky Project had its American premiere at Lincoln Centre, New York, in June 2008 and toured nationally and internationally throughout 2008.
Michael Clark Company’s latest production come, been and gone evolves from Michael Clark’s admiration for the music of rock’s holy trinity, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, who worked in close proximity during the 1970’s. The production premiered at La Biennale di Venezia in June 2009 and toured internationally throughout the year, including to the Edinburgh International Festival and the Barbican, London as part of Dance Umbrella. The production toured the UK in spring 2010, including a return to the Barbican, and will continue to tour internationally throughout the year.
