The Leys CDI (Community Development Initiative)
Mission Statement
The Leys CDI (The Leys Community Development Initiative) is a charity established in 1993, working to enable the development and co-ordination of local projects that will bring long-term benefit to the community of The Leys. The Leys is a housing estate, which encompasses the 1950s estate of Blackbird Leys and its extension, Greater Leys, located on the South-East edge of Oxford. The population has grown significantly in recent years to around 15,000 and the housing is predominantly council and housing association owned. Despite the relative affluence of Oxford, the Government lists parts of the estate as ‘super output areas’, which are areas of priority concern in the UK in terms of deprivation and poverty. Five areas are in the 20% most deprived wards in England and one is in the 10% most deprived. Deprivation is evidenced in low income levels, poor health, antisocial behaviour, low expectations, high levels of teenage pregnancy, drug dealing, drug running, and low educational attainment.
