Sense International
Mission Statement
Children who are born both deaf and blind in the developing world are completely isolated, ignored and even locked away. Often, their parents do not understand what is wrong and are overwhelmed with the stress of looking after them. They do not know how to communicate with their children who become more and more frustrated and isolated. Sense International provides specialist communication training and support to build the bridge between these children and the rest of the world. The transformations they achieve are remarkable.
Our work gives deafblind children the chance to live a full life; to reach their potential. Children like Joyce and Dan. Joyce was 14 before anyone tried to communicate with her and she had no friends, but now she is learning Braille and loves skipping. Dan was locked away until he was six but after only two months, has started to communicate and his father is now so proud of his son.
Sense International can only reach children like these with your help. Your gift will help them feel the real joy of connecting with their families, playing with friends and even going to school.
To find out more about the difference that can be made with their support, and more stories of how our work transforms lives, please visit www.senseinternational.org
“Before Sense International helped us I thought I was the only mother in the world with a deafblind child, I did not know where to turn. Now, all that has changed; my daughter is transformed, she is happy, she makes friends and knows she is loved.”
Sense International is a focused and effective organisation with 50 staff worldwide – only nine full-time staff are based in the UK. We know that the most powerful and sustainable way to build services is to use the existing infrastructure in developing countries to keep costs low and to create local ownership. We are an independent charity, linked to Sense UK, with programmes in India and Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Romania, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil that are staffed by local people.
Last year we reached over 30,000 deafblind people and their families across the developing world but there are still thousands of children locked in their own world. Please help us reach them. Your support will help transform the lives of the most isolated children in the world. Thank you.
