The Karen Hilltribes Trust

Mission Statement

Our mission is to help the Karen people of northern Thailand to build a better future. Together we have developed a number of projects based around 3 key aims: improving health, improving access to education, and creating self-sustainable income.

Who are the Karen?
The Karen are the largest ethnic minority in Thailand and have lived for centuries as subsistence farmers in small mountain communities. The difficult terrain has restricted development and kept the region largely inaccessible, making it the poorest part of Thailand. Poverty is high in rural areas and especially in the agricultural sector. Farmers such as the Karen are the lowest income group, with 22% living below the poverty line. The Karen are facing problems such as the exhaustion of land fertility and increased pollution of water resources. 40% of the population lack access to clean drinking water, causing high levels of disease.

The difficult terrain not only causes problems for the farmers but it has serious impact on education. Secondary schools are limited to the larger towns and many Karen children live too far away to continue in education. As a result only 25% of have a full school education.

What we have achieved since 2000:
Installed 80 innovative water systems providing clean water to 30,000 Karen people.
Distributed 20,000 blankets and 10,000 mosquito nets among remote Karen villages.
Built a school dormitory giving 100 children access to school.
Running a free daily bus service transporting 400 children to school.
Supporting 100 Karen students through university and vocational college.
Regenerated over 500 acres of flooded farmland
