Gwalior Childrens Charity (Help Children of India)
Mission Statement
To help and provide for poor, disabled, destitute and underpriviledged people esp. children, women and the aged, the most vulnerable ones, of Gwalior and Chambal region, one of the most backward and oppressed areas in Central India.
The charity operates in association with Gwalior Health and Education Society, Snehalaya and Gwalior Hospital and Education Charitable Trust. Ours is not just a Childrens hospital but includes a hospital for children and women, a general hospital, eye centre, physiotherapy centre, dental centre, help line and ICTC, hospice for children with HIV, mobile hospital, rural health centres, schools and orphanages. We support hospitals, rural clinics, schools and Orphanages including our own "Snehalaya", meaning "the home with love" in Hindi. Shenalaya is a care home for disabled children, homeless women and the aged, where they live together as a family with aims to help make them independent and live with dignity. Now with focus on Snehalaya and its surrounding villages, we have changed our name as Gwalior Childrens Charity in place of Gwalior Childrens hospital.
The complex includes a school for special needs, multi-sensory room, vocational training and health centre. The total establishment is spread out in an area of 25 acres with its own gardens, farms, Gaushala (cow-shelter), temple and facilities for hydro & physio therapy, yoga & meditation, sports and play fields and more...
We have capacity to accommodate 80 children in ten cottages there. At present we have 63 children, nine more are expected to join any time now. We also provide day care and respite care facilities for children in local community as well have agreed with Childline of Gwalior to provide respite care to the children rescued by them from the streets of gwalior.
We were able to add a 30 bedded primary and emergency care rural hospital within Snehalaya Campus on 23rd Aug. 07, the anniversary day of Snehalaya. On 1st Dec. 07, the World AIDS Day, we launched Gwalior network for positive people as a support group for HIV victims. There is also a help line available 24 hours a day and an integrated counselling and treatment centre (ICTC) with video conferencing facilities with 450 experts in different fields all over the world to provide counselling and advise for any medical and health related problems.
The building work for an integrated school within Snehalaya Complex, is at advanced stage. The school is planned to open in early 2011 and will provide education and vocational training to nearly 1000 children esp. girls from surrounding villages as well those in Snehalaya. A special focus will be girls who currently remain un-educated undergoing oppression all their lives otherwise.
So far we have been working towards health and education. Now with the opening of Snehalaya, we have started integrated rural development work, which will achieve sustainable development in villages surrounding Snehalaya in all areas including hygiene, health, sanitation, vaccination, safe drinking water, education and vocational and industrial training with employment opportunities in the local villages. We would appreciate any help from any source to achieve these goals and advance these efforts.
